49 days in Japan; 21 day pass?

Hi,

My husband and I will be spending 49 days in Japan this spring and because we'll be hanging out a bit in some places, I just want to make sure the 21 day pass makes the most sense for us. This is our first trip to Japan since the 1990s, and we're going to some of the more far flung destinations this time.

Our itinerary is as follows. (We can't really change it due to obligations in Kiso.)

Days 1-6: Tokyo
Days 7 & 8: Matsumoto (bus from Tokyo)
Days 9-12: Nagiso
Day 13-15: Takayama
Days 16-18: Kanazawa (I'm thinking we should start the 21 day pass on day 17)
Days 19-21: Sendai
Days 22 & 23: Hagurosan via Tsuruoka
Days 24-26: Shizukuishi
Days 27 & 28: Mutsu (to visit Osorezan)
Days 29-31: Hakodate
Days 32 & 33: Sapporo
Days 34-36: Asahidake/Daisetsuzan
Day 37: Wakkanai (
last day of JR pass)
Days 38-40: Rebun-to
Days 41-43: Rishiri-to
Days 44 & 45: Sapporo
Days 46-49: Tokyo

We're planning to fly from Rishiri-to to Sapporo on Day 45, and also from Sapporo to Tokyo on Day 46.
Does my plan of activating the pass on Day 17 make the most sense? Would we save any money if we got an additional pass of some sort? Note that we're planning to take a bus from Tokyo to Matsumoto, and a bus between Takayama and Kanazawa.

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

Yes, a 21 day JR Pass would give you good savings compared to normal tickets. Going up to Hokkaido, not to mention all the way north to Wakkanai and the JR Pass would give you good savings. Since you already have decided on your other transport, an additional pass would not be needed, though a 7 day JR Pass would nearly pay off for just the return Sapporo - Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for your reply.

We leave in a few weeks, and I just want to make sure the JR pass covers all of our major train travel during those 21 days — on the shinkansen whenever possible.

Kanazawa to Sendai
Sendai to Tsuruoka
Tsuruoka to Shizukuishi
Shizukuishi to Shimokita (for Mutsu)
Shimokita to Hakodate
Hakodate to Sapporo
Sapporo to Asahikawa
Asahikawa to Wakkanai

Lastly, we'll need to go from Tadachi or Nagiso to Takayama on May 5 outside of the JR pass. As this will be during Golden Week, do you think there's a need for us to reserve seats on the portions that have seat reservations? What route do you suggest to save time and cash? I'm currently looking at the 1:31 train from Tadachi to Nakatsugawa, transfer to Tajimi, transfer to Minoota, and finally transfer to Takayama, arriving at 5:14pm. Is there a bus for any of this route?

Thanks again!
