Hi,

I'm excited about my Japan trip and would like suggestions on how best to get around the country.
I've had a go at calculating the price of my 3 week trip. Although the ease of the 21 day JR Pass is convenient, I'm not sure if I get much savings.

Could you please recommend which JR Pass best suits my itinerary below, and for what dates I should get one?

Day 1 - Osaka (arrive from Kansai airport)
Day 2 - Osaka
Day 3 - Day trip to Nara
Day 4 - Kyoto
Day 5 - Kyoto
Day 6 - Kyoto
Day 7 - Hiroshima
Day 8 - Hiroshima
Day 9 - Day trip to Miyajima
Day 10 - Day trip to Akiyoshida
Day 11 - Day trip to Okunoshima
Day 12 - Kobe/Osaka/Nagoya (still deciding on this, but essentially making my way to Tokyo)
Day 13 - Kobe/Osaka/Nagoya
Day 14 - Tokyo
Day 15 - Day trip to Nikko
Day 16 - Yokohama
Day 17 - Tokyo
Day 18 - Hakone/Kawaguchiko
Day 19 - Hakone/Kawaguchiko
Day 20 - Tokyo
Day 21 - Tokyo (depart at Narita airport)

Thank you :)

Hi there,

Nice trip! When it comes to the JR Pass the most cost efficient way would be to look at a 7 day JR Pass and cover travel To Hiroshima and all the way to Tokyo, with the stops included. This would likely mean arriving in Tokyo 1 day earlier, for instance late on day 13 if you activate it on 7th.

Then buy normal tickets or passes for travel around the Kansai Area and Tokyo. For instance, A Tokyo Wide Pass would be good for travel to Kawaguchiko and Nikko.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hello,
As said, tweaking your plans and using the 7 day pass works best. For the Fuji area, you could use a Fuji-Hakone Pass, and for the rest, there is the Tokyo Wide Pass or the Tobu Nikko Free Pass.

If you shorten your Kansai trip by a day, you can still see Osaka and Kobe on separate evenings after the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM. Osaka is especially good in the evening - particularly Dotonbori, plus the Abeno Harukas Bldg and Umeda Sky Bldg are excellent.

For your one day, you can see some sights in Nagoya if you like, but you might find nearby Inuyama Castle and Meiji Mura to be more interesting.

For getting back to Narita, the easiest cheap way is the 1000 yen bus.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for the helpful advice, Daniel & Toraneko! I'm going to take both your suggestions and get the 7 day pass! :)
