Can you advise is it workable for me to use the 14 days JR pass to travel to these cities? Beside JR pass, should I buy other pass or tickets?

Hi there!

Yes I would certainly recommend a 14 day JR Pass for this itinerary, the return to Fukuoka (Hakata) almost pays for more than the initial cost alone. You will be making some amazing savings with all the additional travel!

Now what additional tickets / passes to get? The JR pass will cover the lion's share of you train travel still you may have to pay some additional fees for travel on private railways, such as in the Hakone area and from Kyoto/Osaka to Koyasan and the bus to Kurokawa onsen. Still this fees are very minor compared to the rest of your travel. For instance Kyoto - Osaka is covered by the rail pass than from there you travel on by Kintetsu rail to Koya which is 850 by normal train. So I would suggest buying the 14 day JR Pass and just local tickets for the small parts that are not covered.
