Hi every one am after a bit of help as i really know very little about japan, and the rail system there. i am heading to Japan in February for judo training:
will be arriving to narita on the 4th of february and staying at the kodokan (Japan, Tokyo, Bunkyo, Kasuga, 1−16−30) for a couple of days.

heading to osaka on the 8th or 9th,

will be staying in Osaka until the 20th on which date i will be travelling back to tokyo, staing at the sakura hotel Jimbocho.(on the shinjuku line)

for the next week i will be travelling to axis bjj 1-34-16, Setagaya, Tokyo, twice a day for training i will be training from 10am-11.30 and either 5.30-7pm or 7.30-9pm daily.

and on the 2nd march i will be heading out to saitama super arena and back.

then finally on the 4th march i will need to return to narita to fly home.

what is/are my best options as far as getting sround.

Hi there!

Normally a 7 day Japan Rail Pass becomes cost effective when you spend over ¥28,300 on JR tickets within a 7 day period. As you'll be doing some travel interspersed with fairly long periods of training, I don't think a rail pass is a good option in your case as you won't hit this minimum amount needed to make a rail pass cost effective.

As you'll be staying in Tokyo for a fairly long period of time (and commuting), I recommend you purchase a single [Narita Express => Tokyo + SUICA prepaid travel card deal on arrival] on arrival. This will allow you to get some discounted travel on the Tokyo subway and JR/other train lines in Tokyo and get you into town. When the SUICA card runs out of prepaid charge, you can top it up at metro and JR stations as needed.

For your travel to and from Osaka and Saitama I recommend purchasing single JR train tickets (bullet and normal), or looking into travelling on highway buses if you are on a tight budget and have lots of time. I don't recommend using low cost airlines as they are often time consuming and tiring over relatively short distances.

For reference, here is a basic itinerary to get you started:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Korakuen: ¥160 (9mins, 3km, incl. non-JR)
  3. Korakuen > Tokyo: ¥160 (10mins, 3km, incl. non-JR)
  4. Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13,950 (194mins, 556km)
  5. Osaka > Tokyo: ¥13,950 (194mins, 556km)
  6. Tokyo > Jimbocho: ¥160 (7mins, 2km, incl. non-JR)
  7. Jimbocho > Setagaya: ¥480 (32mins, 12km, incl. non-JR)
  8. Setagaya > Jimbocho: ¥480 (33mins, 12km, incl. non-JR)
  9. Jimbocho > Saitama-shintoshin: ¥500 (42mins, 27km, incl. non-JR)
  10. Saitama-shintoshin > Jimbocho: ¥610 (45mins, 30km, incl. non-JR)
  11. Jimbocho > Tokyo: ¥160 (8mins, 2km, incl. non-JR)
  12. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

I hope this helps!
