Hi,

My friends and I will be in Japan in January for 12 days. We will be buying JR Passes as we will be going from Hiroshima to Osaka to Tokyo.

I use Hyperdia to check on the train timetables and itineraries, However, I am confused with the seat fee. (1) Is it covered when using the JR Pass (of course on JR trains)? (2) Do we need to do seat reservation? And how far from the travel?

Thanks so much,
Rain

And also, is Holiday Rapid Mt. Fuji from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko covered by JR Pass? Thanks again,

Hi there,

To start with your last question first, the Holiday Rapid to Kawaguchiko is covered :D

As for seat reservations, all fares are included in the JR Pass, so you don't have to pay anything extra. With the JR Pass you can either reserve a seat in advance or just hop on the train and take a non reserved seat. Personally I prefer to reserve my seats in advance - this way you avoid queuing up on the platform before hand. Seat reservations can be made up to 5 minutes in advance and it is only on busy days, such as Golden week than reservations should be made a day or so in advance.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Thanks Daniel-san, yiu are very helpful indeed.

Just one more thing. Is it ok to eat in the train? Not in the subway of course, but in long-distance one like shinkansen and express trains.

Again, thanks so much.

Yes that's no problem at all.

It's even common to have a train attended selling bento boxes and other foods/drinks in the train.
