I was just wondering if it was worth buying a JR rail pass.. if yes which type?
We are a family of 4: 2 adults, a 19 yrs old son and a 10 yrs old.
Itinery:
9 Jan looking around Kyoto
We are traveling from Kyoto to Nara return on the 10 Jan (how to get there)
11 Jan kyoto to shinjuku (any easy way to get there)
12 Jan shinjuku to Hakone return
13 Jan Shinjuku to Hakuba
20 Jan Hakuba to Shinjuku

I think individual tickets will make most sense for you rather than a 14 day rail pass, but just to check lets see the costs of your travel:
JR ticket cost: ¥39,870 for 8 legs
As you can see you'll make savings with a 7 day pass, but this will not fit all your travel in. I recommend a 14 day pass if you think you'll do more JR travel (for example a day trip to Hiroshima or Nikko), but if your travel is decided then I think purchasing individual tickets is best. For Hakone I recommend the Hakone Free Pass which you can purchase at Shinjuku station.
