It would depend on the specific route you travel and how many days you would spend in each place. If you plan on going one way Sapporo - Akita, then you'd likely be fine just buying normal train tickets as these fares should not add up to much.

I suggest using our JR Fare Calculator, to get an estimate cost of your fares. Then see if any JR East pass or JR National pass costs less.
