Hi, thank you for your very helpful forum.

I will be in Japan from May 27th to June 8th (13 days).
I already went to Japan in 2018, so this will be my second time.

Here is my itinerary:

Date
May 27
Arrive Narita, Tokyo

May 27–29
Visit Tokyo

May 29 (AM)
Train to Hakone (Owakudani/black egg), then train to Kyoto

May 29 (Late PM) – June 1
Stay Kyoto

Day trip during Kyoto stay side trip to Nara (AM) + Osaka Dotonbori (PM)

June 1 (Late pm)
Train to Hiroshima

June 2
Visit Hiroshima

June 3
Hiroshima AM → Train to Kanazawa

June 3 (PM)
Finish day in Kanazawa

June 4
Visit Kanazawa → Train to Takayama

June 5
Visit Takayama → Train to Matsumoto

June 6
Visit Matsumoto → Train to Tokyo

June 7-8 Shopping/visiting Tokyo

June 8 Return to Narita

Is it too tight?
We are active and want to see as much as possible.

What is the best train pass option?

We plan a lot of train rides late in the day, but we are not sure if there are enough late trains.

Also, do we need a Suica card?

Thank you for your help! Feel free to suggest changes if you think my itinerary is too tight.

(Sorry for my English — I am a French native speaker!)

Hi there,

Welcome (back) to the forum :) Let's go through your questions one-by-one:

1.) Is it too tight? - there are a few places that do look a bit busy. For example, side trip to Nara (AM) + Osaka Dotonbori (PM). It is all possible for sure, especially if you start early but it may also be nice to spend a bit more time in one place and get to know it better. At the end of the day this is a personal question, do you want to see all the highlights quickly and take it slowly, maybe see a bit less but enjoy a bit more locally.

2.) The 7-day Japan Rail Pass is the best fit, 100%!

3.) We plan a lot of train rides late in the day, but we are not sure if there are enough late trains. - Only thing I can say here, plan your trips ahead of time and you should be okay. This is a good read to get you started.

4.) Also, do we need a Suica card? Yes, highly recommended, you can pay for almost anything with it - not just transport. It's easy to use in your Apple or mobile wallet.

Hope this helps :)
Daniel
