Hi Daniel,

I am planning a trip in Nov for 7 days. I have not fixed my itinerary yet and I have couple of questions.

One itinerary has a 17 hours layover in Tokyo from 2:45pm to 7:30am but I will be arriving NRT and flying out from Haneda airport.

  1. Do I have enough time to sightsee much in Tokyo?
2, Do I need to get all my luggages out and bring them to Haneda airport? or just my handcarry? the airline will ship my checked in luggages?

Another itinerary is:

Nov 13 arrive NRT 2:45pm, stay in Tokyo for 2.5 days
Nov 16 Tokyo to Osaka by train
Nov 17 Osaka - Kyoto - Osaka
Nov 18 Osaka - Nara - Osaka
Nov 19 Osaka - Kobe - Osaka
Nov 20 10:10am KIX to HKG

I wonder would it worth to buy the 7 day JR express or get the Keisei One-way airport + 2 day metro pass Y2980, one way Tokyo-Osaka Y13420 and 4 days Kansai Pass Y6000.

For Kansai Pass, if I use on Nov 16, can I use it for my trip from Osaka to Kansai airport? Is it go by day or 24 hr. usage?

Thanks!

Couple more question:

  1. How far is Haneda airport from Tokyo? How to get there?

  2. Any good suggestion on where to stay in Tokyo?

  3. I plan to stay in Osaka as a base for Kansai, any good suggestion on hotel at reasonable price?

  4. The first itinerary assumes 17 hours in Tokyo and 6 days in Kansai area, is it too much?

Hi Maria,

Depending on your itinerary, a JR Pass could certainly be a good option. It mainly depends on whether or not you make a return to Tokyo.

Going to your first question, do you mean that you will just be 17H in Tokyo? If so you should have some time to explore the city. Something nice to visit might be the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observation Deck which offers free entrance to the 45 level observatory deck and you can get a beautiful panorama view of Tokyo.

2.) Generally you have to carry your own luggage with you from Narita Airport to Haneda but please confirm this with your airline company as regulations can differ.

1.) Travel to Haneda Airport from Tokyo takes about 45minutes, using the Yamanote line and Tokyo Mono rail. HERE is a guide on how to access Haneda.

2.) For staying in Tokyo, consider Shinjuku if you really want to be in the middle and enjoy the busy heart of the city. An other good area to stay is around Ueno which is a little more relaxed but it is well connected and easy to explore Tokyo from.

3.) I don't have a specific hotel in mind, if you wish to stay in Osaka on a budget, I'd recommend looking into staying at a hostel. Hostelworld.com is a very good website for hostels in Japan, otherwise I'd recommend using a booking website such as Japinican or Traveladvisor that allow you to search using your own preferences and price range. It is also a great idea to read other travelers experiences.

4.) Too much for? If you mean Kansai - I don't think so but it would also be nice to stay a little longer in Tokyo.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

PS: The Kansai pass (like any JR Pass) is counted in days and expires at the end of the day at midnight.
