Hi,
I am visiting Tokyo in September and need to visit Tochigi on a Friday for work. I will be working Friday morning to around 1630ish. If I leave Thursday morning, will there be rail service back to Tokyo Friday night after 1700? Or will I need to stay the night and leave Saturday morning back to Tokyo?
Also, as I am not familiar with Tokyo rail system, what is the best route to take for the rail system from Tokyo to Tochigi and back?

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning. You should be fine at that those hours getting on the train.
Tochigi is quite a large area, and the best route would depend on where you need to be exactly. I can give you the route if you know what station you need to be at.
