Hi, I plan to travel from 17- 28th Dec, from Tokyo to Osaka.
My iternary is: Narita Airport to Tokyo City, Tokyo to Hakone, Hakone to Nagano (see Snow Monkey), Nagano to Takayama (see Kanazawa and Shirakawago), Takayama to Osaka.
Please advise what kind of rail pass should I get. We have 3 adults travelling as a family.

It would depend on your exact planning. I've made a list of normal ticket prices below to get an idea of how to best use a JR Pass.
Narita Airport -Tokyo ¥ 2,820
Tokyo - Hakone (Odawara station) ¥ 3,540
Hakone - Nagano ¥ 11,450
Nagano - Takayama ¥ 12,760
Takayama - Osaka ¥ 10,300
For a total of ¥ 40,870. Given the route, I would advise a 7 day JR Pass and use it for the more expancive travel from Hakone - Nagano - Takayama - Osaka. You'd make great savings if this part could be covered with a 7 day JR Pass. It may be better to buy normal tickets if this would not be possible.
