If I can’t reserve a seat until I activate my JR pass how can I sure that I will be able to get a seat on the train I want?

Hi there,
Trains rarely sell out, you can be sure of seats on normal days if you make your reservations 1-2days in advance and 2-4 days during busy days like New Year.
