Hi Daniel, I want to take photos of trains in Japan. Here are two questions about the seats of the train...

1: If I just want to take non-reserved seats, can I take the Shinkansen trains at any time so that I don't have to follow a schedule? (I know that I can't take Nozomi or Mizuho)

2: Sometimes I will just take photos inside the Shinkansen platform without going out. If so, can I just hop on the non-reserved seats of any Shinkansen train without going out of the gate and get my ticket checked again?

Happy to help you get started!

1.) Yes, you can always board with the JR Pass and exit when you want. The pass is truly unlimited in this sense, hop on, hop off as you like and explore freely.

2.) You won't be checked as long as you stay within the platform area. Entering/Exiting the station is where tickets are checked, on board the conductor may also ask for your pass.
