I'll be going to Japan in about 5 months, however I'm going to start traveling at the end of this month and thus won't be able to order the pass for the right date. Is this a problem or can I order the pass for an earlier date and then activate it when I'm actually in Japan?

Hi Tessa,
A JR Pass has to be activated within 3 months after purchase and you can select the 1st day of travel up to 1 month in the future when you exchange the JR Pass. Thus, in the ideal circumstances, you'd have 3+1month before you have to start traveling.
