Hi - I am planning to buy 6 passes for myself and 5 members of my family but two of my kids may wish to undetake some trips on their own. Is that permitted or do all 6 of us need to travel together whilst using the passes?

Yes, of course. Each ticket is individual, so you do not need to travel together.
