We are looking for advice about which JR pass to purchase. Our family of five is travelling in Tokyo for 6 days June 26-July 2 and then travelling from Haneda to Kyoto July 8 and travelling around Kyoto for several days before going to Takayama and then Fuji area and finally back to Tokyo. Is a 14 day pass our best option?
If we are travelling between July 8-21 but some of that time will be in Fuji area where we cannot use the JR pass is a 14 day pass still our best option?

I would look at a 7-day Japan Rail Pass and see if you can use it for travel from Tokyo - Kyoto - Takayama - Fuji. These are the trips that cost the most and where a Japan Rail pass is used best.

Could you clarify - can I use the 7 day pass for 7 days of travel over a 14 day period or do I need a 14 day pass to travel on 7 different days during a 14 day period?
The JR Pass is counted in consecutive days, so it will keep counting down from the first day of use.
That's why I would suggest a 7-day JR Pass and use it for the intercity routes.
what do you suggest for travel while we are in Tokyo for the first 6 days (2 adults and kids ages 9/12/14) - what pass or card should we get? staying in asakusa area and flying into narita and out of haneda
