7 day or 14 day pass?

Hi!

We are a family of 12 and will be travelling to Japan this December 19 to 31. We arrive in Osaka on the 19th then would like to do a day tour of Kyoto so we will already exchange our passes on the first day. Our itinerary looks like this so far:

Day 1 Saturday Dec 20 Osaka - Kyoto
Day 2 Sunday Dec 21 Explore Osaka (Shinsaibashisuji, Matsusaka Gyu Yakiniku M)
Day 3 Monday Dec 22 Explore Osaka (Universal Studios)
Day 4 Tuesday Dec 23 Explore Nara
Day 5 Wednesday Dec 24 Explore Osaka (Osaka Castle, Namba)
Day 6 Thursday Dec 25 Travel Osaka to Tokyo via Shinkansen
Day 7 Friday Dec 26 Look for snow (Nagano)
Day 8 Saturday Dec 27 Explore Tokyo
Day 9 Sunday Dec 28 Explore Tokyo
Day 10 Monday Dec 29 Explore Tokyo
Day 11 Tuesday Dec 30 Explore Tokyo
Day 12 Wednesday Dec 31 Depart Narita Airport (Tokyo)

My question is, if we can do the long travels within 7 days, I should just get the 7day pass right? But by the time our passes expire in Tokyo, we will just do the usual Shinjuku, Shibuya areas which I understand is on the Yamanote Line so if I buy the 14 day pass will it be worth it or we should just get the 7 day pass and pay for individual trips?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Kat,

Yes the 7 day JR Pass is the best option if you can include your long travels with it. This would mainly be Osaka - Tokyo and travel between Nagano - Tokyo city. You could then supplement the JRPass with local tickets for the days, when you won't be using it.

If I might make a suggestion, consider making a day trip from Tokyo as well. This would really help you make both the most of your visit to Japan and of the JRPass. Popular day trips from Tokyo include Kamakura, Yokohama or my personal favorite, Nikko. More ideas for day trips can be found HERE.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you again Daniel!

Hi Kat,

Yokohama is great for kids, the harbor water front is great for a walk and offers much in terms of entrainment. There is also the local China Town which is the greatest in the world. It's also a great visit.

Make the most of your trip!
Daniel

Does it snow in any of the cities you mentioned Daniel? So we can hit two birds with one stone and we wont have to go to Nagano. Maybe in Nikko? How far is it from Tokyo via shinkansen?

Thanks again for all the help.

Hi again!

There's a chance for snow but it really needs to get cold before it is visible the bigger cities. Nagano however is pretty much a 100% chance. So it may be saver to go there if you really want snow.

Nikko also is a bit more north and remote, so you'll also have a better chance there.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
