Be aware though that you can't go all the way there on a JR Pass. A regional pass for Hakone though will save you a lot of money.

The best way to use the JR Pass from Kyoto - Hakone is to use the Shinkansen to Odawara station. From there you can use local (non JR) transport to explore Hakone.
