It depends on how many days you will be travelling, could you tell me how many days you spend in each city?

Not exactly sure at this stage but only a couple of days in each city. Our trip is 10 days total.

Hard to say without having your final plan, for now try to look at a 7-day JR Pass and see if you can fit your long distance travel within those 7-days.
