8 days & itinerary check

Hello – I was just hoping to double check purchasing a JR pass and a quick question regarding our itinerary.

We’ll be in Japan from March 25 – April 1. We’ll be flying into Osaka and heading to Kyoto for 5 days than to Tokyo for the rest of the trip. While we’re staying in Kyoto, we’re also looking to visit Hiroshima and Miyajima for one day, Arashiyama, Nara. Than we’ll be heading to Shinjuku and around Tokyo for the rest of the trip and flying out of Narita.

Would a 7 day regular JR pass be the best option?

Also because we’ll be there for 8 days – is it best to activate the pass from the very beginning (Osaka to Kyoto)? Or wait one day so that we have it for the end of our trip (Shinjuku to Narita)? Or is a better option some sort of airport transfer/shuttle?

Hi there,

To answer your last question first, you would save a couple of hundred of Yen if you use it on your last day to travel from Tokyo to Narita. The other reason why I would use it on the last day is that a return can always be a back stressy and the less you will have to worry about things the better.

To see if a JR-Pass is a good option, here is a little cost overview without the pass.

Osaka -->Kyoto ¥ 540
Kyoto Hiroshima ¥ 21580 (return)
Hiroshima Miyajima ¥ 1,140 (return)
Kyoto Nara ¥ 1380 (return)
Kyoto --> Shinjuku ¥ 13,220
Shinkuju --> Narita ¥ 3,110

For a total of ¥ 40,970 A 7 Day JR-Pass is ¥ 28,300 saving you at least ¥ 12,670

One of these passes may be of great help in order to save some money getting to Osaka from Kansai Airport.
