Hi, our family of 5 will be traveling to Japan in Sept for 2 weeks. We will be landing in Tokyo, spending one night, and then head to Hiroshima. We will be there for 4 night. Afterwards, we plan to make our way to Himeji, Kyoto, and then Tokyo. Most of the travel will be in the second week. Is it more economical to get a 7 day pass just for the trip up to Tokyo from Hiroshima and purchasing tickets from Tokyo to Hiroshima or would you recommend getting a 14 day pass?

Given your itinerary, a 14-day JR Pass offers the utmost convenience. With this pass, you'll simply need to make seat reservations for your bullet train journeys, eliminating the need to purchase individual tickets for each trip.
Alternatively, you could consider two options using a 7-day JR Pass:
1) Individual Ticket for Initial Leg:
Purchase an individual ticket for your Tokyo to Hiroshima journey, then activate the 7-day JR Pass for your second week of concentrated travel (Hiroshima to Himeji, Kyoto, and back to Tokyo).
2) 7-Day Pass for Early Travel:
Use a 7-day JR Pass starting from your Tokyo to Hiroshima leg, then purchase an individual ticket for your final long-distance journey (e.g., Himeji/Kyoto back to Tokyo) once the pass expires. The JR Pass also covers the JR ferry to Miyajima and the Hiroshima sightseeing loop bus, offering extra convenience during your stay in Hiroshima.
