3. Kyoto > Nara: ¥690 (45mins, 41km)
4. Nara > Kyoto: ¥690 (45mins, 41km)
5. Kyoto > Kinosakionsen: ¥4,710 (146mins, 158km)
6. Kinosakionsen > Kyoto: ¥4,710 (146mins, 158km)
7. Kyoto > Kanazawa: ¥6,510 (126mins, 224km)
8. Kanazawa > Takayama: ¥4,180 (161mins, 148km)
9. Takayama > Tokyo: ¥14,300 (273mins, 532km)

JR ticket cost: ¥51,810 for 9 legs

• 14 day Japan Rail Pass (¥45,100) saving: ¥6,710

As you can see you'll make good savings with a 14 day pass so I can certainly recommend this option. Unless you think you'll do more travel I think I recommend the 14 day pass coupled with some 1 or 2 day unlimited metro passes while you are in Tokyo.

We made some changes to our itinerary and would value your opinion. What's your opinion on doing a day trip to mount koya from kyoto? Should we still do a 14 days or a 21 days jr pass? If we get the 14 day pass, should we just activate the pass on the 3rd of April?

Here is our revised itinerary:
March 29 - arrive narita. Hotel near tokyo station
March 29 to April 2 - tokyo. Day trip to Mount Fuji
April 3 - 11- kyoto. day trips to Nara, mount koya and kinosaki
April 12- 14- kanazawa. Day trip to shirakawa
April 14- 16- takayama
April 16-18- tokyo. Hotel near tokyo station
April 18 depart from narita
