I tried to look up all the costs on hyperdia and didn't get the same fees for trips as i saw when you responded to my first question. I have also change our itinerary and wonder if now it would pay to buy the 14 day pass . Also how difficult is it to buy different tickets when I am once in Japan.thank you for your help, here is the corrected itinerary.
10/15 Nagoya to Hakone (odawara and buy hakone pass)
10/16. Hakone
10/17. Hakone to Tokyo
10/18 Tokyo
10/19. Tokyo to Kyoto
10/20. Kyoto
10/21 Kyoto
10/22. Kyoto to Hiroshima morning
10/22. Hiroshima to Kyoto. Evening
10/23. Kyoto
10/24. Kyoto to Nara morning
10/24. Nara to Kyoto evening
10/25. Osaka
10/26. Kyoto to Nagoya
10/27. Nagoya flight home

Looks like a significant upgrade! Lets take a look at your costs:

  1. Nagoya > Odawara: ¥8900, (71mins, 282km)
  2. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥1450, (36mins, 83km)
  3. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13420, (164mins, 513km)
  4. Kyoto > Hiroshima: ¥10990, (112mins, 380km)
  5. Hiroshima > Kyoto: ¥10990, (126mins, 380km)
  6. Kyoto > Nara: ¥690, (44mins, 41km)
  7. Nara > Kyoto: ¥690, (44mins, 41km)
  8. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540, (28mins, 42km)
  9. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
  10. Kyoto > Nagoya: ¥5240, (49mins, 147km)

JR ticket cost: ¥53450 for 10 legs

  • 14 day rail pass (¥45,100) saving: ¥8350

Based on your itinerary you'll make significant savings with the 14 day Japan Rail Pass. Also, note that this is the base savings. There are lots of opportunities to use JR lines in Tokyo in addition to additional unplanned day trips for further savings.

Purchasing different tickets in Japan is not hard - simply visit a JR ticket counter at the station and indicate to the staff which train you would like to use. As all your travel covers mainly metropolitan areas you should not have too many problems with using English, but I recommend you bring a print out of your route just in case - English is much easier to understand when written down sometimes!

The JR Pass needs certain settings in Hyperdia to be deactivated before you can see correct pricing relevant for comparison. You can learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.
