Hi,
We will be arriving at Haneda Airport on 17th September 1am and planning to take train to Sapporo that morning. We will stay in Sapporo for few days. So will definitely take some train trips around Sapporo/Hokaido. Then we will take a train trip to Nagoya and stay for 2 days. Then train trip to Kumagaya - stay 1 nights then another train to Tokyo. Stay in Tokyo for few days. From Tokyo We are also planning to take train to Oita/Beppu and stay for few days there before take train back to Haneda.

Our questions are:
1. Do you think is it better to fly from Haneda to Sapporo? And fly from Tokyo to Oita?
2. Will the JR pass work for above trips?
3. Can we use the JR Pass to take regional trip in Oita, Haneda, Sapporo and Tokyo?

Hi Mytha,

1.) Its hard to make direct comparisons between flying and rail travel, as the prices for airfares change by the day and airlines have different rules for luggage etc. The best advice I can give here is to write out the route that you are looking into and what it would look like using air or rail, then compare time and cost and see what fits your personal schedule the best. Personally I prefer to take the train, as you get on in the middle of the city and step out in the middle of the city, though travel time may be longer. While with the airplane you often have hidden costs for luggage and waiting time at each point.
