Hi there,

We are travelling to Sapporo on 17 December. Will stay there for 8 nights and explore other cities from there as we do not want to keep changing hotels.

Can you advise the itinerary as follows:
Sapporo - Otaru - Sapporo
Sapporo - Asahikawa - Sapporo
Sapporo - Furano - Sapporo
Sapporo - Hakotate - Sapporo

A few more days in Sapporo.

Can you advise the travel time and how much the above fares cost? Should we buy Hokkaido pass? Hokkaido pass will cover other train rides too?

The we will get a flight from Sapporo to Osaka. Stay in Osaka 7 nights and explore other cities from there.

Osaka - Kobe - Osaka
Osaka - Kyoto - Osaka
Osaka - Nara - Osaka
Osaka - Nagoya - Osaka

Should we get JR Pass or Kansai Pass? Kansai Pass will cover other train rides too?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi Cherrie-San,

Sorry for the late replay, I needed some time to research your travel in Hokkaido and to find out what the best option would be. I've got two options for you to consider.

The first is a 7 day Hokkaido pass (¥ 22,000) + Local tickets in Kansai/Kansai Pass (¥???) + Return Osaka to Nagoya by Shinkansen (¥ 12,360). This would mean using the JR Hokkaido pass for travel around Hokkaido. It is fairly easy to make savings with the JR Hokkaido and it is a good deal for sure with your planned itinerary.
For Kansai I would recommend buying normal tickets for travel to Kyoto and Nara because tickets are not very expansive and a Kansai Pass does not always pay off.

The other option would be to go for a 14 day JR Pass (¥ 45,100) and use it for both travel in Hokkaido, around Kansai and to Nagoya. This would offer extra flexibility since the JR Pass can be used on all JR lines and you just need one ticket for all your travel.

About travel from Sapporo - Toya, you can take a direct train to Toya station which takes about 100 minutes. There's a bus traveling from the station to the lake. Here is some extra information on how to access Toya.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
