Hi there,

From Tokyo to Takayama you have two options:

1.) Take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagoya and from there take the Hida wide view express to Takayama.

2.) Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Toyama and from there a ltd. express train to Osaka.

The routes are about the same in travel time and the best route depends on what time you travel. I would recommend taking route 1.) as it is quite scenic.

From Nagoya to Osaka, take the Hida Express to Nagoya and the Hikari Express from there to Shin-Osaka. All these routes are covered by the JR Pass.
