Is the pass worth it for this trip?

Hey guys,

I'm arriving with my girlfriend to Narita, where we are taking the train to Kyoto. After 3 days in Kyoto, we are taking the train to Tokyo for the rest of the week, where we will be travelling along the JR line (probably one new area per day). From there we would be taking the train back to Narita.

Would the pass be worth it for us?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I'm thinking it would cost.

JR pass = $279

Narita to Tokyo = $30 x 2
Narita to Kyoto = $150
Neighbourhoods around Tokyo = ???

In this case I'm not sure it would be worth it.

Hi Bryan,

I do think that it would be worth considering a JR Pass, given your plan above.

Narita airport - Kyoto ¥ 16,330
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,420
Tokyo - Narita airport ¥ 3,140
+Local travel

For a total of ¥ 32,890 or ¥ 4,590 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300. This is excluding any additional travel you may do within Tokyo. Reading your question I do get the feeling too that I may have missed something. In your route your miss Kyoto - Tokyo, are you traveling this part using some other transport not mentioned?

Nope, we were going to use the train to get around everywhere, sorry if that wasn't clear.

Full route would look like - Narita > Kyoto > Tokyo > 3-4 rides around Tokyo > Narita.
