Hi there,

Would we be able to get a hand in checking the following itinerary using the JR Pass for the first 7 days. Our pitstops are Kyoto, Hakone and Tokyo, but we will be doing daytrips from these cities:

Day 1- (Monday- early in the morning) arrival in Narita Airport and off to Kyoto to stay there for the next 4 nights
Day 2- Hiroshima and Miyajima Island> head back to Kyoto
Day 3- Nara in the first half of the day and then Osaka for the rest> head back to Kyoto
Day 4- Just Kyoto
Day 5- Kyoto> Hakone (stay for a night)
Day 6- Hakone for half the day for more sightseeing then> Tokyo (for the next 4 nights)
Day 7- Tokyo
Day 8- Tokyo
Day 9- Tokyo
Day 10- Tokyo
Day 11- Tokyo> Narita Airport

Would you be able to tell us how long it will take to go from each of these places and the type of JR train/ metro train. We are especially interested to know your advice on the Kyoto>Hakone trip and how early realistically should we wake up to start the trip in order to still do a little sightseeing before having to return to the ryokan. It is a very packed and exhausting itinerary:(

Also, just wondering if we would still be able to use JR PASS in Tokyo as that would be the last day that we can use it for.

Thank you very much for the help!:)

Hi there,

Here is route information for your travels:

Narita Airport-->Kyoto is 238 minutes, (see example here)

Kyoto --> Miyajima 160~180 minutes plus the ferry (see exaple here

For Hakone:
I would recommend taking the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Odawara(about 180~ minutes), and from there travel on my private railway. This because transport is run by a different company in the Hakone region so unfortunately the JR-Pass won't cover the full trip. Depending on your final destination in Hakone it can be good idea to buy a Hakone Freepass locally that covers all kinds of transport in the area including, trains, buses and rope-ways. I would try to be on the train leaving Kyoto at 8.00 latest, this way you have can have a decent day of sightseeing in Hakone.

After Hakone you can return to Odawara and from there take the train back to Tokyo. There you can use the pass for one more day and if you still feel like traveling maybe make a day trip to Nikko or something :)

All in all though I think it is a very nice plan, you will see a lot and travel much but you can relax the last couple of days in Tokyo as well.

-Hope this help -Daniel

Good choice! I would recommend visiting the local China town there if you have time ;)
