Day Trips from Takayama

Hi there,

There are a couple of options that come to mind.

The first is travel to Shirakawago. While the JR Pass does not cover the bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go, this is the most popular day trip to make from Takayama and well worth considering if you like traditional Japan.

An other is Kanazawa, this is a very beautiful city with a lot of interesting places to see. Such as the old Geisha quaters, Kanazawa Castle and Kenroku-en garden.

An other wonderful visit is Kamakochi, again the bus is not covered by the JR Pass but this really should not stop anyone.

An other nice visit if you want to try Japanese bath culture is Gero Onsen about 40 minutes by train from Takayama. This Onsen resort is located in the Japanese alps.
