We are arriving in Hiroshima on May 1, traveling to Kyoto May 4, Tokyo May 6 and Yokohama May 8. Will we have troubles during Golden Week and will we need reservations. Would it be wise to have a JR pass and do you have any suggestions for side trips.

Golden week tends to get very busy and it is recommended to make seat reservations 2-3 days in advance. I would recommend doing so the moment that you can on May 1st.
I do think that a JR Pass could help you make savings depending on what day trips you would make. Hiroshima - Kyoto is ¥ 10,590 and Kyoto - Tokyo is ¥ 13,020, this alone would not pay directly for a 7 day JR Pass (28,300yen) but adding a day trip or two could make the JR Pass quickly pay off.
