Tokyo to Kyoto

The best way to get to Kyoto is to take the Shinkansen (high speed bullet trains) directly from Tokyo station to Kyoto. From Shimbashi you can take the Yamanote line to Tokyo station.

It is possible to take the SHINKANSEN HIKARI from Kyoto back to Tokyo with the JapanRail pass? Do I have to reserve a seat ahead of time, or can I just show up an hour before?

Yes the Hikari is completely covered!

During normal days trains rarely sell out so you can show up 15min in advance, reserve a seat and hop on the train.
