I have been looking into getting a rail pass for myself and my partner for our trip to Japan in December.
We will be going from
Osaka airport to kyoto for 2 days
Kyoto to Osaka
Osaka to Hiroshima return
Hiroshima to miyajima ( seen you can use you rail card for the ferry?)
Osaka to Tokyo
I'm wanting to know if I should get a rail pass for a period of days or just buy our tickets separately?

Let's have a look at ticket prices (without the JR Pass) and see what would be wisdom.
Kansai Airport - Kyoto ¥ 3,480
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540
Osaka - Hiroshima (return) ¥ 20,300
Hiroshima - Miyajima, including ferry (return) ¥ 1,140
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,950
This adds up to ¥ 39,410 or ¥ 11,110 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is 28,300Yen. So you would be able to make some very nice savings, gives that you would do the above travel within the 7 day validity period of the JR Pass.
