Hi there,
The main benefit of traveling Green Class (1st Class) on the Japan Railways is the extra comfort and quiet offered by green class. You have more space, reclining seats and a lot less people travel Green Class.

You have to purchase a Green Class JR Pass from the start, it is not possible to upgrade a normal JR Pass.
