I am planning on taking train on day trip to Hiroshima from Yokohama. It seems that even if I use the pass (7-day) for one or 2 days it will be cheaper than stand alone tickets. Is that correct?

Yes, if you plan on doing a return trip from Yokohama to Hiroshima and back I'd suggest purchasing a JR Pass - however, if possible I'd also suggest maybe staying one night over in Hiroshima, as even with Shinkansen the Journey can be long and you'd have to wake up quite early. After all, with the JR Pass travel would be very flexible so it's definitely worth considering.
