I'm a little confused about the Shinkansen Hikari line. Can I use the JR Pass for this travel from Odawara to Kyoto. If not, is there a more direct way to get from Okawara to Kyoto with my JR Pass without having to go back to Tokyo?

Hi there!
Odawara actually is on the route between Tokyo - Kyoto, so there's no need at all to travel back to Tokyo.
You can take the Hikari directly from Odawara to Kyoto and this trip is completely covered by the JR Pass!
