I'm staying overnight at a hotel near Kawaguchiko then trying to travel south to my hostel across the water from Miyajima. Using a JR pass, what is the quickest/easiest way to reach Miyajima? I imagine I will have to backtrack to Tokyo first.

That is one big killer trip! Its going to take most of your day to get from Kawaguchiko - Miyajima.
