I am just wondering what type of pass we would need for 18 days in Japan. We arrive in Osaka- then Tokyo- Takayama- Kanazawa- Nagoya- Kyoto.

It's hard to know without knowing the dates that you are traveling and how long you plan to stay in each place. The JR Pass is valid for all these destinations but it would depend on your planning if one would be helpful.
