Hi there,
The JR Pass is available in periods of 7 days. Likely the best option would be to get a 7-day pass and for 1 day just buy normal transport.

Thank You. Trying to get from Ikebukuro to Toyama by Shinkansen, any advise what needs to be done. Do I buy the JR Rail Pass then make reservations?

Take the Yamanote line to Ueno or Tokyo station, then Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama.
Once you have activated your JR Pass, you can go to any JR station to reserve your seats.
