Hi,
I was wondering if it was worth getting JR rail passes for our forth coming trip?
We are there for 10 days staying in Tokyo and mainly exploring the surrounding areas.
But we would like to visit Kyoto and Osaka for day trips for two of the days with us returning to back to our base on the same day. Is this doable? Or is the journey too long for a day trip?
Your advise will be much appreciated.

Hello A Lee-Hinton,
Yes that's certainly possible. Travel time to Kyoto is about 160 minutes (2h40min) giving you more than enough time to explore the city and enjoy almost the whole day there. Osaka is only 20-30min away from Kyoto and adding that to your trip would not be hard either.
The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price, so I'd certainly recommend one. You could for instance use your JR Pass for local travel around Tokyo or make a day trip from there.
