This adds up to ¥ 40,080. The price of the 7-day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 so you would end up saving at least ¥ 11,780.
So I think ti will be well worth getting the JR Pass for this journey!

If I buy the pass in the US, can i just start using right away at my arrival at Narita or do I need to go to train a ticket counter to exchange or get validated before using the rail pass? Can i use any rail service with this pass around Tokyo and around Kyoto? many thanks

Hi again!

You have to activate your JR Pass once you arrive in Japan, you can do so at the exchange office at the airport or at most major stations within Japan. The process is simple and you can use the JR Pass right away.

The JR-Pass is also valid on local JR lines within Tokyo and can also be used on JR lines around Kyoto, do note that many places in Kyoto are reached by bus or metro instead.

another question: i have a friend who is already in japan. Can i buy her a pass in the US, I will send her the pass via email, she prints it out and follow the process of validating, and use it ?
just like you dont need an airline ticket, you only need the flight # and check in.
For some reasons, i dont think we can do the same with a Japan railway train pass. Many thanks.

Hi there,

Yes you can buy the pass for him/her while you are in the states but please be aware that he/she needs to have entered under a 90-day Tourist Visa.

Once you place the order we will send you a physical voucher that is required in order to activate your JR Pass.
So you can't print it yourself, we can however ship this directly to an address in Japan.
