We are visiting Tohoku/Tokyo/Karuizawa in Dec. Appreciate your advice on which best-value JR passes to buy. I am contemplating on buying JR East Pass and Tokyo Wide Pass to cover the whole trip. What do you think?

6 Dec Tokyo to Sendai
7 Dec Matsujima
8 Dec Sendai to Morioka
9 Dec Jodogahama
10 Dec Morioka to Aomori
11 Dec Hakkoda Mountains
12 Dec Aomori to Lake Tazawa
13 Dec Lake Tazawa to Yamagata
14 Dec Yamagata to Tokyo
15 Dec Tokyo to Karuizawa
16 Dec Tokyo to Singapore

A JR East Nagano Pass would make sense, especially to northern Tohoku.

However, I don't see where a JR Tokyo Wide Pass would fit. Perhaps for going to Karuizawa and back?

It's a very nice itinerary btw, most people I talk to do not visit Tohoku at all.

Do you suggest that I buy both JR East Tohoku Pass and JR East Nagano Pass? The two JR East Passes combined (19,000 yen + 17,000 yen) can be used flexibly over 10 days to cover our entire trip.

JR East Tohoku Pass can cover the following trips:
6 Dec Narita Airport to Sendai (Day 1 use)
7 Dec Ferry to Matsushima (JR East Pass not applicable?)
8 Dec Sendai to Morioka (Day 2 use)
9 Dec Jodogahama (Day 3 use)
10 Dec Morioka to Aomori (Day 4 use)
11 Dec Bus from Aomori to Hakkoda Mountains (JR East Pass not applicable?)
12 Dec Aomori to Lake Tazawa (Day 5 use)

JR East Nagano Pass to cover the rest of the trips:
13 Dec Lake Tazawa to Yamagata
14 Dec Yamagata to Tokyo
15 Dec Tokyo to Karuizawa (return)
16 Dec Airport transfer to Narita
