Wakayama Prefecture Help!

Hi I was hoping someone could help :)

My partner and I are planning a trip to Japan in September (9th - 27th) and have an itenery almost sorted but I'm stuck with the wakayama leg of our journey.
Currently our plan is:
9 - 12 sept - Tokyo travel to Osaka on 13th
13th - overnight Osaka
14th - overnight koyasan
15th - 17th - ?? Somewhere wakayama
17th - 19th - Nagoya (travelling to Nagoya evening of 17th)
20th - 22nd - Kyoto
End in Tokyo with trip to Fuji

So with that in mind; after koyasan I was thinking of travelling to kii-katsuura for nachi taisha either via jr line around the coast, or via hongu ( but I can't seem to work out a good route from koyasan to hongu).
In addition, I was planning to ask a 'very special question' to my partner (if you get my drift) whilst at nachi taisha.
So if you have any recommendations of somewhere special to stay also that would be gratefully welcomed.

So my questions,
1 – does this room seem reasonable?
2 – would you recommend by the coast or via Hongu ( bearing in mind I'm trying to make this a special as possible)
3 - would the waterfall at nachi taisha be a good spot to 'ask the question'?
4 - is there anywhere extra special, ideally really historic and/or are with a lot of character we could stay in that area?
I love the idea of a traditional old ryokan but not sure if this is the right area

I Appreciate these questions aren't strictly itinerary related but I would really appreciate any advice you can give
Thanks

Hi there,

I'm honored to comment on such a special trip! That said, I think I already lost you at the first question, what room exactly do you mean?

Getting around Wakayama and area can be a bit hard to figure out, due to different companies being involved. This page is very useful as general guide. Going via Hongu is likely the better option.

Kumano Nachi Taisha is a very nice place, mystical even. Asking someone for something is a very personal thing, I'm not sure if I can answer that question. However, if you do decide on this place, then I recommend going early or just after 5 pm before dusk. These are the official opening times and nearly all Japanese tourists will yet have to come or will have left. Giving you a more private moment. Also keep an eye on the weather forecast.

Are you planning on hiking (part of) the Kumano-kodo route? Sometimes the perfect moment comes out of no where, along this route there are multiple nice places and I could imagine just walking there and getting all wrapped up in the moment.

4.) I think staying a night at Koya-san is likely the most special option. As alternative you could look for a Ryokan along the Kumano-kodo pilgrim route. Monks and pilgrims have traveled this road for centuries and some of the Ryokan (local inns) have been there for as long, see here for a list. You could also swing by Nara, it is not too far and there are many places there with historic importance too.

I'd likely avoid Wakayama city, while not bad there is not much special there and you could be bored there.

Good luck with your adventure and asking that all so important question!
Daniel

Apologies, my first question autocorrected the word route to room.

I've got some more planning to do now so thank you again for your advice :)
