We are planning to go from Narita to Yokohama for 3 days then back to Tokyo for 3 days then down to Kyoto for a further 3 days then return to Narita.
Will we be able to use the bullet trains with a JR Pass?
Will the Jr Pass be of use in these cities during our stay for any local travel?

Can we use the bullet train to Kyoto?

Hi there,
Yes, you can use all Hikari class shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto. Here is a sample itinerary for you. Based on your itinerary I recommend you use:
- The [Narita Express + Suica metro card deal] to get you into Yokohama from Narita and also give you ¥1500 of free JR and metro travel for your first few days in Japan.
- The 7 day Japan Rail Pass for use from day 3 until your departure on day 9.
Use of the JR Pass in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kyoto
While the JR Pass will cover all the main travel between cities, and is very useful within Tokyo, it is not accepted on non-JR metro and bus systems in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kyoto. For these cities you will need to look into citywide passes, or at purchasing single tickets as you go:
- For Kyoto I recommend these bus or metro passes,
- For Tokyo/Yokohama there are this range of metro passes to look into, but if you have the Suica card from the Narita Express /Suica deal you can use this instead.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Mari
It is a bit confusing from here in Australia for women of a "certain age"!
I too was thinking that the Suica card was the way to go but had not thought of a 7 day JR Pass.
Thanks again
