I will land at Narita, and my plan is to travel by train to Kyushu, and visit pottery sites there for several days. Then I will start back towards Tokyo, stopping at Hagi (hopefully), and spending several days in the Osaka/Kyoto area, again visiting pottery sites. Is it cost-effective to get a seven day pass for such a trip?
Train to Kyushu
Hello there,
I can tell you that a big YES applies to your question :)
With a 7-day JR Pass you would really make a home run but even a 14-day JR Pass would allow for some great savings.
I can make an exact count if you give me your planned places to visit.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
Thanks for the reply. I'll purchase the pass. (Unless you can tell me what trains to take)
I've lost my DK Japan Travel guide and have reordered it. I'll get back in touch with more specific information when the new one comes in.
Hi Again!
Feel free to post any time when you find your Travel guide.
In the meantime here is a little list to give you an idea of savings you can make with the JR Pass.
Tokyo - Hagi ¥ 21,090
Hagi - Osaka ¥ 14,830
Osaka - Fukuoka (Kyushu) ¥ 14,790
Fukuoka - Tokyo ¥ 21,920
This adds up to ¥ 72,630, the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 so you would save ¥ 44,330. Which is really good! Though I will say that you will be on the train a lot!
I have made a reservation at a hotel in Saga City for tomorrow night (May 12). My flight arrives at 5:00 from Atlanta GA. I know I have to stop at the travel service center to exchange my voucher. Is the station there? How long will it take to get to Saga City? I'm worried that I'll be on the train all night. Can you tell I'm nervous about it?
Hi there!
Sorry to bring you bad news. The Journey to Saga takes a little over 9 hours by train and you won't be able to reach Saga the same day if you arrive at Narita Airport around 5 p.m. since train stop riding after midnight. I think the best thing to do is to find a hotel on the route (for instance in Tokyo or Nagoya) and resume the journey the next day.
As it turns out, all I can find of my pass is the Fed Ex envelope it came in. I'm afraid I'll be going nowhere in Japan.
I am very sorry to hear that and hope that you have found it before your departure.
We do offer a refund on unused passes, you can return it to use if you find it once you get back (processing fee applies).
Consider taking a night bus if Japan if you do want to visit Kyoto/Osaka.
Good luck and let me know if I can assist with anything,
-Daniel
