I am very confused of the different types of rail passes.
I would like to search for the best options for based on my plan.
D1 Tokyo - Takayama
D2 Takayama/Shirakawago
D3 Takayama-Hida Furukawa - Kyoto
D4-D7 Kyoto (Nara)
D8 Kyoto - Tokyo
D8 - D12 Tokyo (including Nikko, Disney sea and travelling to airport)

Hi there,

I made a little analasys of costs without tje JR-Pass.

Tokyo --> Takayama ¥ 14,000

Takayama --> Shirakawag
Shiirakawago can't be reached by train, the best way to reach is it by Honi Bus but is not covered by the JR-Pass.

Takayama --> Hida Furakawa ¥ 230

Hida Furakawa --> Kyoto ¥ 9,700

Kyoto ¥ Nara 1,380

Kyoto --> Tokyo ¥ 13,020

Tokyo Nikko ¥ 10,460

Tokyo --> Narita Airport ¥ 2,740

For a total of ¥ 50,150. I think you have a couple of options, the 14-Day JR-Pass is ¥ 45,100 so you would already save over 6,200 Yen with it and you could potentially use it to get from the Airport to Tokyo as well.

If you could return to Tokyo on Day 7 you could also buy the 7-day JR-Pass then visit to Nikko by local train and save some money.

Hope this clears things up,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the reply.

The other thing I am not clear is that when I check the ticket value without JR pass.
It seperate into two values : ticket fare + seat fee

Using JR pass, do I still need to pay seat fee ? (basically its just covering the ticket fare ?)

So apple to apple compare shall be JR pass cost v.s. all tickets fare only ?

Also it seems JR rail pass has exceptions for certain lines.

Hi there,

The JR-Pass covers everything, including the fair, seat fee and seat reservation fees.

The ''Fare'' is the amount that you would normally pay if you travel by local train, the seat fee is required for both Shinkansen and limited express trains.

Since the JR-Pass covers both fees there is no need to worry about it :)

There are some lines that are run by different companies and the JR-Pass is not valid for them, we have a great map to show you what is covered.

Hope this helps.
Daniel
