Tokyo First time

I do recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for your travel to Tokyo - Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo if you can make this route within 7 days.

The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is roughly the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka, so any additional travel you cover with it, is what you save.
