My friend and I will be traveling to Japan from 29 nov to dec 14.. From 29 nov to 5 dec, we will be staying in Osaka. During one of the days, we are planning to do a day trip to tottori sand dunes to see the illusion. From 5 dec to 7 dec, we will be staying in Kyoto and then from 7 dec to 14 dec, we will going to Tokyo.

In Osaka, we are planning not to do any day trip beside Tottori and we will be staying namba. We will be using the bullet train to Tokyo from Kyoto. In Kyoto, we will be staying at a Hotel Granvia inside Kyoto Station and at Tokyo we will be staying at Hotel Niwa Tokyo. From the hotel's website, it seems we need to use the train a lot (I think majority we will be using the subway more). Is JR Pass a necessary? Also, how can we travel from Osaka to Tottori Sand Dunes?

Hello Kaylee,

A 7 day JR Pass would have been great if you visited Tottori and Tokyo within 7 days. However since you've got the luxury of time on your side, this does not work out. At the same time travel costs are below the price of a 14 day JR Pass, so I'd advise buying normal tickets as you go!

You can ride the Super Hakuto Express directly from Osaka to Tottori station, making for easy access.

Just wondering is a day trip to Tottori reasonable? Should we leave Osaka at 9am so we can make more use of the time in Tottori? Also, roughlt how much would be the fare from Namba to Tottori?

Hi Kaylee,

It's ¥ 7,090/155 Minutes from Osaka station. Add 200yen/30 minutes from Namba.

Leaving early is a good idea to make the most of your visit to Tottori. There's a Super Hokuto Express leaving 7:37. I would even go so far to suggest taking that one.

Just one last thing. Is the fare a round trip or one way, can we reserve seats? If yes, can we purchase early tickets at kansai airport? Do we need to make any transfer when we use the super hokuto express? Also, do you have any idea what time is the last bus service from tottori sand dunes to tottori?

It is a one way fare. You can buy tickets directly at Kansai Airport, or any other JR station.
