difference between seats in normal and green class

We are travelling to Japan in May and are doing this route:
6 May Kyoto-hiroshima, 8 May Hiroshima-Takayama, 10 May Takayama-Tokyo
As my husband is very tall we are doubting whether to buy a normal or green tickets for the JR railpass.
Do you know what the difference in seating is. I understood that in the green carriages there is more room for your luggage and more space between the seats but I also read that the normal carriages are comparable to our first class carriages in The Netherlands.

Hi there,

Yes, both things are true but also depend on what train you are traveling on (there are many kinds of trains in Japan!). Seats on Shinkansen trains in great and often better than 1st class seats in many western countries.

I think the main selling point for Green Class is that you travel in peace and quiet. The extra comfort is welcome too but being around 1.88 myself, I never really had space issues on normal trains.

Traveling in Green Class is not "a must" have but certainly "nice to have" when your budget allows it.
