Setouchi Area Pass & Green Car Reservations

Hi there,

It is my understanding that the 7 days Setouchi Area Pass for 22,000 JPY at the point of this question, allows for unlimited travel for locations specified in the area. I have several questions that I hope to clarify.

First, I have an itinerary that spans across exactly 7 days and I would like to travel to the following:

Osaka<->Universal City
Osaka<->Kyoto
Osaka<->Kobe
Osaka<->Nara
Shin-Osaka<->Hakata

Will the 7 days Setouchi Area Pass cover all these locations?

Second, I understand that the pass covers Ordinary Car with Reserved Seating, am I correct to say that it is all covered within the 22,000 JPY paid for the pass?

Lastly, if I would like to have myself upgraded to the Green Car for Shin-Osaka<->Hakata, how much will it be additional for the journey, and will it then be recommended to get the regional pass?

Hi there,

Yes, the Setouchi Pass should cover travel to these locations. You won't need to pay extra for seat reservations, so yes, that's all you'll need to pay.

If you want to use the Green Car, you'll need to purchase a separate Green Car ticket, although the JR West site is quite ambiguous on this - it says that a separate ticket will be required, so I assume that you'll either pay the difference or pay an additional fare specific to the Setouchi Pass. Because there is no info on the price of this online, my suggestion would be to ask a JR employee at a ticket desk at any major JR West Station.

I assume that to upgrade it would be quite a lot of money - I'd say potentially upwards of 10,000YEN, so the regional pass would still likely be worth it because of the other journeys you'll be making.

Yes, it has been very useful! Thank you so much, I will be sure to reach out to a JR staff member at any of the major JR West stations.

If I may, for reasons out of my control, I am arriving in Tokyo on Day 1 and making my way straight to Osaka (and thereafter the use of Setouchi Area Pass comes along), after which, I will be making my way back towards Kawaguchiko (Mishima) and Tokyo. With an itinerary like so, is there another area pass that might make it more worthwhile? I know the JR Rail Pass nationwide is definitely not worthwhile.
