JR Regional Pass or just regular JR Pass

For your trip, a national Japan Rail Pass since you are travelling through 3-4 regions. It will also depend on how many days you spend in each region, in order to know what pass matches your plans best.

In Tokyo, 4 in Kyoto and then 5 in Nozawa before heading back
to Tokyo.

In this case, you are right between the 7 day JR Pass and 14 day JR Pass. As in, the 7-day JR Pass would be great if you did this trip within 7 days, and the 14 day JR Pass needs a bit more travel to help you make savings.

Tokyo - Kyoto - Iiyama comes down to around 26.000yen, if you can do this with a 7-day JR Pass and any additional travel (such as a day trip, airport transfer etc,) then it may be worth it.
